The Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) was founded on August 1, 1948, at the suggestion of General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, Chief of Staff of the Air Force. AFOSI is responsible for conducting criminal investigations, counterintelligence operations, and protective service operations for the U.S. Air Force. The headquarters of AFOSI is currently located at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, D.C.
In 2022, Colonel Sarah E. Zundel became the first female deputy commander of AFOSI. Colonel Zundel is a career special agent who has served in a variety of leadership positions within AFOSI. She has deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, and she has also served as the commander of the AFOSI Detachment at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland.
In her new role as deputy commander, Colonel Zundel is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of AFOSI. She is also responsible for advising the commander of AFOSI on a wide range of issues, including policy, strategy, and operations.
Colonel Zundel's appointment as deputy commander is a significant milestone for AFOSI. It is a testament to her hard work, dedication, and leadership abilities. Her appointment is also a reflection of the Air Force's commitment to diversity and inclusion.
