Football League System in England
Overview
The English football league system is a hierarchical system of interconnected leagues for club football in England. It comprises over 140 leagues and 480 divisions, with the Premier League at the top and the National League System at the bottom.
Premier League and Football League
The Premier League is the top tier of English football. Below the Premier League are the Championship, League One, and League Two, which together form the Football League. The Premier League and the Football League are professional leagues, with clubs paid for playing and training.
National League System
Below the Football League is the National League System, which is a pyramid of semi-professional and amateur leagues. The top division of the National League System is the National League, followed by the National League North and South. Below these divisions are a number of regional leagues, which in turn are divided into divisions.
Cup Competitions
Teams from all levels of the English football league system compete in the FA Cup and the Football League Cup. The FA Cup is the oldest cup competition in the world, while the Football League Cup is open to clubs in the Premier League and the Football League.
Promotion and Relegation
Promotion and relegation are used to move clubs between divisions. At the end of each season, the bottom three clubs in the Premier League are relegated to the Championship, and the top two clubs in the Championship are promoted to the Premier League. Similar promotion and relegation rules apply between the Championship, League One, and League Two.
