Japan's Tiny Christian Population
A Historical Overview
Christianity has been present in Japan for centuries, but it remains a minority religion, with only about 1% of the population identifying as Christian. Despite this small number, Christianity has had a significant impact on Japanese culture and society.
The Arrival of Christianity in Japan
The first Christians arrived in Japan in the 16th century, brought by Portuguese traders. They were met with initial resistance from the Japanese government, which saw Christianity as a threat to its authority. However, the Christian missionaries gradually gained converts, and by the end of the 16th century, there were an estimated 300,000 Christians in Japan.
